Kinston Grand Opening!

The Grand Opening celebration for Lenoir County’s newest — and largest — supermarket, the Piggly Wiggly® Fresh Buy on U.S. 258, was held on October 31, beginning at 9 a.m. with a ribbon cutting and prizes. The first 300 customers received a free bag of groceries.

The new store, co-owned by Greg Floyd and Ward Sylvester, both sons of the original partners, is one of three Piggly Wiggly®s in Kinston, and is situated next to the former store that was opened in 1979 by Dexter Floyd and Leon Sylvester. The former 22,000-square-foot store has been remodeled numerous times, Floyd said. Plans are to remodel and lease it out. The new 46,000-square-foot facility has created about 45 new jobs in Kinston and may set the standard with its larger floor plan, sky-lighted ceilings, deli-bakery with restaurant and food bar, pharmacy and energy-saving features.

All of the departments have been expanded with more variety, including many organic items. Kinston’s second MedSource Pharmacy will be located inside the new store and store’s meat selection, including seafood and preferred Angus beef, stretches along the entire back wall providing shoppers the largest variety of meats in the area, including the ability to purchase custom-cut and special order meats.

The line started forming outside the new Piggly Wiggly® Farm Fresh supermarket at 2 a .m. Wednesday — seven hours before the doors officially opened for the first time. “We got here at 3:30 (a.m.) and there were cars outside,” store manager Nick Bartlett said. By opening time, the line of waiting customers extended clear across the parking lot at the U.S. 258 site, beyond the old Piggly Wiggly® that the new store replace. They hoped to be among the first 300 people inside and claim a bag of free groceries.

The new store will be offering demonstrations, free samples and giveaways for the next four weeks. The new Piggly Wiggly® hours will be 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sundays. Pharmacy hours will be 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays.
